Commercial Marijuana Growing Operations Banned In Sacramento County

Voters may have approved recreational marijuana in the last election, but the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors has voted to prohibit all commercial marijuana growing operations.

The vote was 3-to-2.

Supporters of the ban cited problems the county and other jurisdictions have had with crime and pollution.

Don Nottoli voted for the ban.

“Other communities have reflected upon, and whether they’ve been in this state or in other states, and I think, based upon that, there’s been some safety concerns raised,” said Nottoli.

Opponents of the ban say the county would be better off following the City of Sacramento’s lead in preparing for the eventual legalization of sales for recreational use.

Phil Serna voted against the ban.

“I think it was a bit rash to move so swiftly without looking at what perhaps what other jurisdictions across California have done, including counties, but also cities,” said Serna.

The county will reconsider the idea next year, after the State of California issues its rules this year.

Medicinal marijuana cultivation in the county will still be allowed.
