Man arrested outside Marijuana Justice Act rally

LINDEN –A man was arrested outside Linden City Hall Friday after police said he became belligerent during while a rally for Sen. Cory Booker’s Marijuana Justice Rally was taking place.

Linden police say Edward Grimes, of Hanover, shattered a glass jar on the sidewalk outside City Hall. When they tried to speak to him, police say he became disorderly.

It happened while Sen. Booker was hosting an event with several lawmakers to introduce his bill that would end federal prohibition of marijuana.

The Marijuana Justice Act would remove the drug from the list of controlled substances, making it legal.

“We are at a perilous time now, we have got to end this prohibition that has resulted in more violence,” Booker said. “It has been a failed war. We need to regulate it, we need to tax it and we need to start seeing nationally some of the benefits in the places that have done so.”

The Marijuana Justice Act would also allow people serving time for marijuana-related offenses to be re-sentenced. It would also immediately expunge federal use and possession crimes.
