Man’s Texas Arrest Proves Conflict Over Medical Cannabis

HOUSTON (AP) – A California man was arrested in Texas after he was caught carrying a supply of medical marijuana. The man was driving to Houston to visit his hospitalized granddaughter and he is now facing possible prison time.

According to reports, this case against Phillip Blanton reveals a deeper lying problem of the nation’s conflicting attitudes toward pot.

Patients with a rare form of epilepsy can be legally treated with a compound found in the marijuana plant; this is after Texas approved this law in 2015. Medical marijuana is legal in the District of Columbia and 28 states.

Medical marijuana is legal in Blanton’s home state of California. Blanton says he’d brought his supply of medical cannabis to treat chronic pain he suffers as a polio survivor.

Authorities in Wise County near Fort Worth have not yet made a decision whether to prosecute Blanton’s case.
