Marijuana growing operation discovered after fire in San Jose

SAN JOSE —An illegal cannabis farm was discovered after firefighters stumbled into it while responding to a house fire in the Evergreen neighborhood.

According to San Jose fire Capt. Tim Miller, the fire was reported at the 3100 block of Heritage Springs Court at 5 p.m.

Miller explained that the fire was caused by overheated wiring. He also added that the electric meter had been bypassed.

“Simply put, they were stealing power,” Miller said.

He revealed that the illicit marijuana operation was being conducted in half of the two-story home.

According to miller, they were simply doing their job and therefore they had no idea that they would come across a pot grow house.

“I’m really surprised we’re seeing grow houses with the legalization of marijuana,” he said.

The scene was handed over to San Jose police after crews swiftly extinguished the fire. According to Officer Albert Morales, they have not yet made any arrests since no one was at the home when authorities arrived.
