Massachusetts state representative wants to clarify welfare benefitsto buy marijuana

The-Benefits-Of-Medical-Marijuana

Someone cannot use welfare benefits in Massachusetts to buy alcohol or tobacco. Now, a state representative wants to clarify that welfare benefits cannot be used to purchase marijuana either.

State Rep. Shaunna O’Connell, R-Taunton, has been a strong advocate for reforms meant to prevent the abuse of state welfare benefits.

O’Connell is proposing a bill, H.3194, that would add recreational marijuana to a list of items that welfare recipients are prohibited from using cash benefits to buy. That list already includes alcohol, tobacco, gambling, lottery tickets and jewelry. There would be an exemption for medical marijuana.
