Court tells man use legal drugs instead of marijuana

A man who claimed he was self-medicating with marijuana was yesterday granted a conditional discharge.

Leroy Nelson Major, 40, pleaded guilty to a charge of drug possession at his arraignment before Magistrate Ambrose Armbrister.

Major was arrested at Tropical Gardens after police found him with eight grams of the drug.

Major, according to the prosecutor Sergeant Bauld, was fined earlier this year after he was convicted of drug possession.

Major’s attorney, Terrel Butler, said that Major needed help for his drug problem.

She claimed that he was using marijuana for an undisclosed medical condition.

Armbrister told Major, “Until drug possession is made legal for that purpose, you should not have it.”

The magistrate suggested that Major get a prescription for legal drugs from his doctor to address his medical condition.

Major can get an absolute discharge if he successfully concludes a drug rehabilitation program over the next six months.

If Major fails to complete the program, he will have to pay a $500 fine to avoid spending four months in prison.

He returns to court for a status hearing on April 25.
