The Evergreen State to Cultivate Organic Certifications

The Evergreen State to Cultivate Organic Certifications

Signed on Tuesday by Washington State Gov. Jay Inslee, a GOP-sponsored bill will establish a much-needed system to certify the marijuana you’re ingesting is indeed – organic.

Sponsored by Republican Sen. Ann Rivers, Senate Bill 5131 will create “a voluntary marijuana production standard and certification program.”

Sen. Rivers informed Reuters on Tuesday evening, “As we have moved forward in the legal marijuana market, we’re hearing people say, ‘We don’t want any pesticides, fungicides, none of that stuff in our weed.’”

Organic Legislation

Administered by the Washington State Department Of Agriculture (WSDA), the new voluntary program will ensure both recreational and medical products consumed by patients and recreational smokers are organic. Per S.B. 5131, the legislation mandates the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board (LCB) adopt rules and regulations for certifying organic marijuana – similar to other products currently certified under federal regulations. Unable to qualify marijuana as organic under federal regulations due to its Schedule I status, Washington’s LCB would instead implement their own regulations. Once certified by the state as ‘Organic,’ the products could then be marketed as compliant within state standards.

For the Gov.’s consideration, the cultivation of organic marijuana was just one of several cannabis-related issues agreed to in the legislation.

420-Omnibus Bill

S.B. 5131 was a joint effort by the 65th legislature to combine more than a dozen legal modifications to existing marijuana law in the state of Washington. Modifying their home cultivation, advertising, licensing, and public disclosure of “proprietary information” laws,  individuals over the age of 21 can now puff, puff, pass that joint or bong to a friend without fear of legal repercussions.
