KEEP THOSE MARIJUANA MUFFINS AND POT BROWNIES AWAY FROM YOUR PETS: QUEBEC ORDER OF VETERINARIANS

KEEP THOSE MARIJUANA MUFFINS AND POT BROWNIES AWAY FROM YOUR PETS QUEBEC ORDER OF VETERINARIANS

With the legalization of marijuana set for next summer, the Quebec Order of Veterinarians is warning pet owners, especially those with dogs, to keep their animals from accidentally ingesting the stuff.

Maybe more people are experimenting or being emboldened by the upcoming marijuana law; Dr. Caroline Kilsdonk isn’t sure, but the head of the Quebec Order of Veterinarians said they’re seeing an uptick in the number of pets getting sick after ingesting marijuana, usually by scarfing down marijuana muffins and the like.

Kilsdonk said she has no specific numbers but they are on the rise with the impending pot legislation. So they’re sending out an early warning – to keep the pot brownies out of reach and to watch out for symptoms in your pet.

“Seeming dizzy, not walking straight, having problems standing,” said Kilsdonk in an interview with CJAD 800 News.

“They can have vomiting, you can see the eye pupils becoming very dilated, there can be body tremors.”

And the cases can get serious.

“The intoxication can get as bad as killing the animal. They are rare but they do happen,” said Kilsdonk.

Kildonk said they are also recommending against administering marijuana and marijuana-based products to your pet because of the lack of studies and their unknown side effects.

“We don’t know about either the efficiency or the proper dosage so there’s a real risk there,” said Kilsdonk.
