MANCHACA, Texas (FOX 26) – The second of three licensed medical marijuana dispensaries in Texas opened for business Thursday near Austin.
Epilepsy patients with uncontrollable seizures now have a place to go for treatment at Compassionate Cultivation in Manchaca–about 30 minutes south of Austin.
The dispensary is selling just one product–cannabis oil that is high in CBD and low in THC. That means it won’t get patients high, but it will treat a rare form of epilepsy.
Only those with a medical marijuana prescription can shop at the dispensary. To get the oil, patients must visit one of 17 state-approved doctors before visiting the dispensary.
Patients can also arrange a delivery from one of the state’s licensed CBD oil producers.
The first dispensary licensed in Texas was Cansortium Texas in Schulenburg. They delivered CBD oil to a six-year-old girl with intractable epilepsy last week, according to the Dallas Business Journal.
“It’s a struggle to deal with this issue,” said Morris Denton, CEO of Compassionate Cultivation. “This isn’t a business challenge we face. This is a mighty mighty battle that they’re facing daily and sometimes multiple times a day, some kids can count them on one hand and others you lose count. Here they are waiting for this medicine to be available.”
The marijuana plants at Compassionate Cultivation dispensary have been growing for just over two months, according to the dispensary. From seed to sale, it typically takes four months for the cannabis oil to be ready for patients.
