Michigan state bracing for medical marijuana application rush

The state is bracing for a slew of applications to grow and sell medical marijuana come December 15th. That’s when licenses will start being accepted and it’s also when dispensaries open now, will have to shut down by.

So far more than a thousand people signed up for the state’s training sessions on how to get a license. That number will likely go up since the first session isn’t until November.

Many small dispensaries are concerned about the amount of time it will take the state to go through those licenses, saying they can’t afford to shut down and wait for approval.

Patients like Jason Durham are also concerned about what that transition period will mean for them.

“If you were to stock up on three months to wait until this is over with, three months worth of medicine will you past your legal limit that you are allowed to possess,” Durham told News 10. “Without this medicine I have a double spine infusion I would be locked in bed. I wouldn’t be able to get out bed to do my daily duties.”

Last month, a pair of Michigan lawmakers introduced bills to keep medical marijuana dispensaries open while the state doles out licenses. Those bills have not been voted on.
