Midstate weed farm busted while responding to call about destructive hogs, deputies say

Coffee County Sheriff Department

While responding to a call about hogs that were running free and damaging property, the Coffee County authorities found over 30 marijuana plants growing in a man-made green house.

Coffee County Sheriff Deputy Larry Mckelvey says he went to Old Murfreesboro Road on Saturday and when he got there he couldn’t find anyone at the residence.

He came back around 2:45 p.m. to see if anyone had arrived on the scene that may have information, but during the second visit he came across something more concerning than the hogs. A dark green metal building behind the main residence that according to Mckelvey smelled similar to weed.

Sergeant Stephens Sharketti, Investigator Brandon Reed and Mckelvey’s K-9 joined him on the scene to confirm that what he was smelling was weed.

Deputies say they broke the lock on the building and found three grow rooms, one with 33 marijuana plants, grow lights, 20″ circulation fans, water lines, sifting screens, electronic scales, fertilizers, PH chemicals, black plastic plant containers, intricate electric panels, transformers and a humidity trough inside foam lined insulated rooms with sealed joints and air intake ducts.

Investigators also said they found a gallon sprayer with oil extract, which is known to be a natural organic pest control product consistent with pot growing operations.

The marijuana plants with a street value of $100,000 were transported to the Coffee County Sheriff’s Department and the vehicle at the residence was seized.

No arrests have been made at this point because the residents are still being located.
