BILOXI, MS (WLOX) – It all started with a suspicious package flagged by FedEx Corporate Security, and ended this month when a Biloxi man was sentenced to more than eight years in prison and a fine of $7,500. Agents say during the course of their investigation, they found that 19-year-old Duy-Sang Sam Nguyen was involved with at least 150 kilograms of marijuana being shipped to the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
In June of 2017, FedEx Corporate Security notified Customs and Border Patrol about a suspicious package that had a strong smell of marijuana. When they opened it, that’s exactly what they found.
That same day, agents learned about another suspicious package shipping from the same address but destined for different home in Biloxi. Agents intercepted the second package and found more marijuana.
When it came time for a third package, agents organized a controlled delivery and watched as Nguyen’s sister took the package inside. They questioned her and she admitted picking up numerous packages for her brother.
That’s when they went to Nguyen’s home and he confessed to receiving at least four packages every month of marijuana from California. He also pointed agents to an AR-15 in his bedroom and even more marijuana.
After Nguyen pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute marijuana and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, he was sentenced to a total of 106 months in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release.
A number of agencies worked together on the investigation, including Homeland Security Investigations, Customs and Border Patrol, the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, and the Biloxi Police Department. It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathlyn R. Van Buskirk.
