A new poll conducted by Marist in partnership with Yahoo News concluded that a majority of adult Americans have dabbled with marijuana experimentation at some point in their lifetime.
According to the Yahoo News/Marist Poll’s conclusions, 52% of those surveyed acknowledged having tried marijuana at least once – while 56% viewed consumption of the plant’s psychotropic cannabinoids as “socially acceptable.”
Despite the fact that eight out of ten Americans expressed an elevated support for legalizing medicinal cannabis, the hazy reality of adult-use marijuana had those surveyed split down the middle; 47% opposed the legalization of adult-use cannabis while 49% supported it.
Conducted between March 1 and March 7, 2017, the poll was accomplished by surveying 1,122 adults via phone.
Discovering that 76% of those surveyed believe that regular tobacco use is far riskier than regular marijuana use, the new poll examines the ever-changing dynamic between “Weed & The American Family.”
According to the survey, “Most Americans are not especially worried about marijuana use among the nation’s youth. They are just as concerned about children experimenting with cigarettes, alcohol, and sex. While marijuana use by their children tops the list of parents’ concerns, they are just as apprehensive about other risky behaviors.” And rightfully so. In an annual survey performed by Monitoring the Future in 2016, government funded researchers discovered as legalization spreads from state to state, access and interest in getting high declines.
As parents who experimented with marijuana were more likely to worry about their kids “having sex or smoking cigarettes,” the survey concluded kids getting high on weed was primarily a concern of those parents who’ve never tried marijuana before.
