Oklahomans will vote on medical marijuana in 2018

Oklahoma’s governor plans to set an election date for a medical marijuana ballot measure after the start of the new year.

Supporters of an initiative petition to ask voters to legalize MMJ gathered enough signatures last year to schedule a statewide referendum on the measure, known as State Question 788.

If approved by voters, the measure would:

  • Create business licenses for dispensing, cultivating, processing and transporting medical marijuana.
  • Permit doctors to recommend patients for state-issued medical marijuana licenses. Patients must be at least 25 years old.
  • Allow MMJ patients to possess up to 3 ounces of cannabis, six mature plants and six seedlings.

Caps haven’t been set for business licenses, but there would be a residency requirement.

Gov. Mary Fallin said she will decide early in 2018 whether voters will be asked to decide the issue during the primary election in June or the November general election.
