GALESBURG — An Ohio man is in the Knox County jail for hauling 42 pounds of “high grade” cannabis in a car Wednesday.

James P. Perkins, 43, Dayton, Ohio, is charged with Class X felony cannabis trafficking more than 5,000 grams, Class X felony possession with the intent to deliver cannabis more than 5,000 grams and felony possession of cannabis.

One pound is equal to about 454 grams. The most serious charge, the cannabis trafficking offense, is, if convicted, a mandatory prison sentence of between 12 and 60 years.

According to a Knox County Sheriff’s Department news release, county authorities conducted surveillance at the Amtrak station, 225 S. Seminary St., about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday when an Oregon man was seen leaving the train.

That man met with Perkins, who was driving a U-Haul truck pulling a car on a trailer. The Oregon man allegedly loaded two large suitcases in the trunk of the car. The men then departed in the U-Haul.
